What is cinematic website design?

Cinematic website design treats a website like a film: instead of a stack of separate pages, the visitor moves through one continuous sequence of shots that has been directed, cut and paced.

By Fasih Ud Din Mazhar, founder of Atelier Vivance.

How is a cinematic website different from a normal one?

A normal website is a set of pages you click between. A cinematic website is an approach you travel along, where the change from one scene to the next is scrolled through rather than navigated to.

Property marketing shows the difference. It defaults to a gallery of still plates, and a first-time viewer shown the Ponente build cold said it read as "pictures one after another", the whole failure in five words. A house on a cliff is an approach, and an approach is something you make, not something played at you.

What makes a website feel cinematic?

Continuity more than effects. In the Cinq Terres build every clip was generated with its first and last frame locked to the same still, so each join is the same image twice and no seam exists to hide.

Pacing matters as much. A damped spring between the scroll and the frame lets the picture settle rather than snap, so what the visitor sees when they stop is one clean image, not two ghosted together.

Which brands suit a cinematic website?

Brands selling a small range of considered things at a high price: fragrance, fashion, jewellery, hotels, and a single villa or small development. There, presentation carries much of the decision.

A brand with thousands of products, or a site that must be updated every day, is better served by a conventional build.

What are the trade-offs?

Film weighs more than text, so a cinematic site loads slower than a plain page and its budget has to be measured on a phone before launch.

It is weeks of work, and logins, payments and customer accounts are separate work with their own scope and review.

What are examples of cinematic websites?

Atelier Vivance has two cinematic builds of its own to open and judge, each written up as a case study.

Neither was a client commission, and the moving imagery in both was generated and composited by the studio.

The service behind this guide

A property presented this way is the studio's luxury real estate websites service, and its page covers what is delivered for a home or a development.

The registration, how a build is reviewed and the rest of the plain facts are set out on the studio page.

Asking about a site like this

For a cinematic site, send the studio the material you have and what the visitor should feel by the end.
